News15 Argentine hooligans to be deported from SAfrica

South African authorities will deport 15 Argentine soccer fans this weekend.

Police raided a school early Wednesday where some troublesome Argentine fans have been staying for the World Cup. Police and Argentine embassy officials initially said 17 people were detained, but the embassy provided only 15 names Friday on a list of people to be deported Sunday.

It was not immediately clear why there was a discrepancy.

Police and immigration officials raided the Christian Progressive College in the capital city of Pretoria, which has been housing about 165 Argentine fans.

NewsFIFA steps up fight against match-fixing

FIFA will monitor the World Cup’s most vulnerable games for match-fixing threats.

FIFA legal director Marco Villiger said Friday the final group-stage games present the highest risk of being fixed, especially those that involve teams that already qualified for the second round or have been knocked out.

The 32 World Cup teams play their third matches from Tuesday through next Friday.

“We use our means to keep our focus on these matches. Anything else would be naive,” Villiger said.

NewsPolice use tear gas and detain 81 in Chile

Police used tear gas and water cannons to subdue rowdy Chile fans and arrested 81 people in the capital Santiago on Wednesday after the country’s first World Cup win in nearly 50 years, officials said.

Police said they detained the supporters mainly for public disorder in downtown Santiago, where fans massed in red national jerseys blowing trumpets and waving flags as they watched Chile beat Honduras 1-0 in their World Cup opener in South Africa.

“There were a couple of robberies, some arrested for causing damage, but most were for disorder,” a police spokeswoman told Reuters.

Soccer is the most popular sport in Chile and major fixtures can sometimes spark street brawls.

Chile’s victory came 48 years to the day after they last won a World Cup match—a 1-0 win in a third-place playoff against Yugoslavia on home soil in 1962.

This is the fifth World Cup they have been to since and in the previous four they played 13 matches without a win.

10) Spain 0-1 Switzerland – 2010 Group Stage

Let’s start with the most recent. Drawn in Group H with Switzerland, Chile and Honduras, European champions Spain were expected to easily finish top of their pool having lost just one game in almost four years. But, they now face a struggle even to qualify after a shock opening defeat to Switzerland. La Furia Roja dominated possession, smashed the crossbar through Xabi Alonso, and missed a few good chances, but they were frustrated by a stubborn Swiss defence. A second half goal on the counter attack from Gelson Fernandes was enough to win the day for the Swiss.
